Scotland - Thistle

The prickly purple thistle was adopted as the Emblem of Scotland during the rein of Alexander III (1249 -1286).

Considered a noxious weed in many areas, many people of Scottish ancestry find the thistle to be a wonderful symbol of their heritage. It's physical traits - thorny, tough - remind one of the personality of their favorite Scottish ancestors. The beautiful purple color in spring is a reminder of vibrant life. When dry the flowers turn tan and silky.
