The 1940 US census has been released!

There is great excitement about the newest U.S. census release (1940). I haven't yet done much exploring. I basically know where my relatives were in 1940 - after all, only 20 more years and I will be showing up on the census record that are available!! I am anxious to look at the Muir household in Inglewood, California in 1940. It might have a few interesting tid bits.

Are there "Leapers" in your family tree?

2012 is a "leap year" - there is an extra day added to the end of February, giving this month 29 days this year rather than 28.

I think I was aware that there might be multiple births to a family on "Leap Day" - twins, triplets, etc. However, I was reading an item on the Leapyearday blog and discovered some families have multiple members born on this day.
(The closest to this situation in my family, my mother had a sister born on the 23rd of December, 1910, and a brother born on the 24th of December, 1915. My mother was born February 19th, and I was born February 17th.)

In reviewing other information about February 29th, I learned some new facts. (New to me anyway.)
  1. Years that are evenly divisible by 100 are not leap years, unless they are also evenly divisible by 400, in which case they are leap years. (The year 2000 was a leap year, 2100 will NOT be a leap year).
  2. When the rules of courtship were stricter, women were only allowed to pop the question on one day every four years. That day was February 29th.
You can read more about this day at the following sites:
Leap Year Law, Marriage Proposals, and Leap Year Birthday Leapers
Leapyearday.com

I was born in a "leap year." I had grammar school classmates who were born on the 29th - Leap Day. This year they are in their mid-teens, whereas I am considerably beyond my teen years.

You can help observe this day, or assist a "leaper" in your life to celebrate with these items for birthdays and other activities.
